Nakuru Travel Guide: Lake Nakuru National Park and the City

Nakuru is one of the easiest and most rewarding stops in the Rift Valley. The town sits beside a shallow soda lake that has drawn flamingos for generations, and a short drive from the centre opens onto grassland, woodland and rocky cliffs full of wildlife. It is about three hours from Nairobi, which makes it a natural overnight or a flexible day trip.

Lake Nakuru National Park

The park is small and fenced, which means game viewing is dependable and distances are short. It is known as a rhino sanctuary, and you have a real chance of seeing both white and black rhino. Rothschild's giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck, zebra and leopard also live here, and lions are often found resting in the acacia woodland.

The flamingos

Flamingos are the headline act. When the algae in the lake is plentiful, thousands gather along the shore and the edge turns pink. Numbers shift with water levels and conditions, so treat them as a seasonal bonus rather than a guarantee, and ask us what the lake is doing before you travel. Pelicans, storks and more than 400 other bird species keep the lake interesting either way.

Viewpoints worth the stop

  • Baboon Cliff gives a wide sweep over the lake and the valley.
  • Lion Hill is good for woodland species.
  • Makalia Falls is a pleasant picnic spot, especially after rain.

Things to do in and around Nakuru city

  • Menengai Crater, one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world, with a rim walk and sweeping views.
  • Hyrax Hill, a prehistoric site and small museum on the edge of town.
  • Lord Egerton Castle near Njoro, a quirky stone mansion and garden.
  • Lake Elmenteita and Lake Naivasha, easy additions for a longer Rift Valley circuit.

When to go

Nakuru works all year. The dry months from June to October and January to February make roads easier and animals easier to spot. The green season brings lush scenery and fewer visitors.

Planning tips

  • Start early, because wildlife is most active in the cooler hours.
  • Carry water, a hat and a light jacket.
  • Combine Nakuru with Naivasha or the Mara for a fuller trip.
