Lipa Pole Pole: Book a Kenya Holiday in Easy Instalments

"Lipa pole pole" means "pay slowly" in Swahili, and it describes a smart way to take the holiday you have been dreaming about. Instead of finding the whole cost at once, you plan the trip well ahead and settle the balance in stages. For many families, that is the difference between wishing and going.

Why paying in stages works

  • It makes a big trip manageable by turning one large cost into smaller, predictable amounts.
  • It helps you plan early, which often secures better rooms and dates.
  • It reduces stress, because the holiday is paid for before you pack.

How it generally works

  1. Choose your trip. Pick a safari, a beach holiday or a combination, with a realistic travel date several months away.
  2. Get an itemised quote. Know the total, what is included and any deadlines.
  3. Agree a schedule. A deposit confirms the booking and the balance is split across agreed dates.
  4. Finish before departure. The final payment is due before you travel, so allow enough time.

Payment terms depend on the package, the season and the lodges involved, so speak to a consultant about what is available for your trip rather than relying on a general rule.

Questions to ask before you start

  • What is the deposit, and is it refundable?
  • What are the due dates for each stage?
  • What happens if I need to change dates?
  • Can the price change before I finish paying?
  • Which payment methods do you accept?

Good trips to plan this way

Big-ticket holidays benefit most: a Maasai Mara safari in migration season, a family beach week at the coast, or a combined safari and beach itinerary. Start saving early and aim for a trip nine to twelve months away.

Tips to stay on track

  • Set up a reminder for each due date.
  • Keep receipts and written confirmations.
  • Add a small buffer for tips and spending money.
