Best Time to Visit Kenya: A Month-by-Month Safari Guide

July 05, 2026 Mr Days

There is no single "best" month to visit Kenya. There is only the best month for what you want out of your trip. Someone chasing river crossings in the Masai Mara wants a different month than someone hoping for empty parks and lower prices, and both of them want something different again from a traveller planning to end their safari on the coast.

This guide breaks Kenya's year into its three real seasons, walks through what each month actually delivers, and helps you match your travel dates to your priorities, whether that is wildlife, weather, crowds, or budget.

Kenya's Three Seasons at a Glance

Kenya sits on the equator, so temperatures stay fairly consistent all year. What changes is rainfall, and rainfall is what drives everything else: where the animals go, how easy the roads are, how full the camps get, and what you pay.

Dry season (June to October, plus January to March): The best overall wildlife viewing. Vegetation is thin, animals gather at permanent water sources, and roads are in good condition. This is also peak season, so expect higher prices and busier parks, especially in July through October.

Long rains (mid-March to May): The quietest and cheapest time to travel. Some camps close and a few roads become difficult, but rates commonly drop 30 to 50 percent below peak pricing, and the parks feel wonderfully empty.

Short rains (November to mid-December): A brief, lighter rainy period. Most parks and camps stay open, showers tend to fall in short afternoon bursts rather than all day, and prices are noticeably lower than the December holiday peak that follows.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January. Dry, warm, and one of the most underrated months to travel. The parks are still green from the short rains, crowds from the holiday season have cleared out, and game viewing across the Mara, Amboseli, and Samburu is excellent.

February. Similar to January: hot, dry, and reliable. This is also one of the best months to see Mount Kilimanjaro's snow-capped peak from Amboseli, and a strong month for big cat sightings as the dry conditions concentrate prey.

March. The weather starts turning by mid-month as the long rains approach. Early March is still a good safari month; by late March, expect more cloud and the first heavy showers.

April. The wettest month of the year. Some lodges close, roads can get muddy, and game viewing takes more patience. In exchange, this is the cheapest time to travel by a wide margin, and the landscape turns a rich, photogenic green.

May. Rain continues but tapers off through the month. Wildlife disperses widely since water is available everywhere, so sightings require more effort, but discounts remain steep and the parks feel almost private.

June. The rains ease and cooler, drier weather sets in. This marks the start of the high season, and the first wildebeest begin their journey north toward the Mara.

July. One of the best all-round months. Dry, comfortable temperatures, and the Great Migration begins entering the Masai Mara from the Serengeti, with the first river crossings possible from late in the month.

August. Peak migration month. The largest herds and the most dramatic Mara River crossings, alongside the year's biggest crowds and highest prices. Book lodges and vehicles three to four months ahead if you are travelling now.

September. Still excellent for the migration, with slightly fewer vehicles than August as some visitors assume the show is over. Dry, clear weather continues.

October. The herds begin drifting back south toward Tanzania, but resident wildlife across Kenya's parks remains outstanding. Crowds and prices start easing compared to August and September.

November. The short rains typically arrive in the second half of the month. A genuine low season with lower rates, thinner crowds, and strong birdwatching as migratory species arrive.

December. Rains usually clear by mid-month, landscapes look their best under clean blue skies, and the holiday season brings a sharp rise in both visitors and prices toward the end of the month.

Best Time for the Great Migration and River Crossings

If witnessing the Mara River crossings is your main goal, aim for late July through September, with August generally offering the highest concentration of herds and crossings. The migration does not run on a calendar. It follows rainfall, so exact dates shift year to year. Booking a stay of at least three to four nights in the Mara meaningfully improves your odds, since crossings can happen at any time and are never guaranteed on a single game drive.

Best Time for a Budget Safari

April and May are the clearest answer here, with rates commonly 30 to 50 percent below peak season. November is a solid second choice: the rain is lighter, most camps stay open, and prices have not yet climbed for the December holidays.

Best Time for Fewer Crowds

Outside of the obvious rainy season windows, late September and October offer a good middle ground: the migration is often still present in the Mara, but visitor numbers have started thinning compared to the August peak.

Best Time to Combine Safari and Beach

If you plan to finish your trip on Kenya's coast, December to March and July to October both work well, since these periods are largely dry both inland and at the coast. The coast itself stays warm and humid year-round, so your main consideration is simply avoiding the heaviest rains inland during your safari days.

Planning Around School Holidays and Peak Pricing

December to early January and the July to August school holiday period are Kenya's busiest and most expensive windows. If your dates are flexible, shifting even two or three weeks outside these peaks can noticeably lower both costs and crowds without sacrificing much in wildlife viewing quality.

Our Recommendation

For most first-time visitors, late June through September offers the best balance: dry weather, excellent wildlife concentration, and a real chance at the Great Migration. If budget matters more than migration drama, April, May, or November deliver genuinely good safaris at a fraction of peak season prices.

Whatever your priority, timing is only one part of planning a great safari. The right camp, the right route between parks, and a guide who knows the land make just as much difference as the calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the single best month to visit Kenya?
There is no universal answer, but August and September are the strongest choice for most travellers, combining dry weather with peak Great Migration activity in the Masai Mara.

When is the cheapest time to visit Kenya?
April and May typically offer the lowest prices, with many camps discounting rates by 30 to 50 percent during the long rains.

Is Kenya good to visit year-round?
Yes. Kenya's resident wildlife, including lions, elephants, and buffalo, can be seen in every season. Rainfall affects road conditions and how concentrated the animals are, but it rarely rules out a safari entirely.

When does the Great Migration reach the Masai Mara?
The herds typically begin arriving in July, with the largest numbers and most river crossings occurring in August and September before the migration moves back toward Tanzania in October.

Do I need to avoid the rainy seasons completely?
Not necessarily. The short rains in November are light and most parks stay open, making it a good option for budget-conscious travellers. The long rains from mid-March to May are heavier and better suited to travellers who prioritise low prices and quiet parks over guaranteed easy wildlife viewing.
